Interoperability of ticketing in Israel

Years ago, Israel made the choice of Calypso to ensure the interoperability of ticketing at the level of the whole country. The Calypso based interoperability has recently got over a major step with the deployment of a new ticketing system on the Israel Railways network.

From Nahariya in the North to Beersheba in the South, Israel Railways operate 55 stations, with 35 million yearly travelers. This network represents a key development for the national interoperability promoted by the Ministry of Transport.

Israel Railways had to renew its fifteen years old magnetic system and to fulfil to the standard of interoperability chosen by the government, based on the Calypso contactless technology. The Amanet group was leading this project, by developing the new central system for ticket and booking management. The Xerox company, with the assistance of his local partner Ludan Symcotech, has provided all the ticketing equipment, for sale, validation and control, ensuring software development, terminal deployment and maintenance. The system includes contactless cards and contactless tickets; its design has been foreseen for the use by disabled people; the maintenance is planned for 15 years.

Today, Israel Railways benefits from a modern ticketing system answering to all his needs. And for the Ministry of Transport it is a key step in the generalization of Calypso as the standard of interoperability at the national level.
